Perceive, find and recognise. Capture, reproduce and show. Martin Reukauf’s painting is one that needs a place to develop. And Reukauf’s place is: the forest. And the forest is: many places at the same time, a space that moves within itself, a delimited expanse of light and dark, colour, shadow, light and form. Reukauf is an observer, discoverer, questioner and interpreter. For him, painting is a reaction to what he sees, to what he perceives. An answer to questions about the connection between reality, perception and representability.
Reukauf’s oil paintings on canvas have a strong physical presence, sometimes applied in several layers, sometimes with only fleeting, almost transparent traces of color, they cast a spell over the viewer. Like an invitation to come closer, to search between surface and detail, the play between recognizability and the risk of detaching oneself from the pictorial within the details. Reukauf’s pictures are effective in their discrepancy and develop their own dynamic, which changes not only the picture itself but also the way we think about the forest itself – much remains open, subtle interpretations become visible.
Reukauf’s pictures are created in the perpetual outdoors and show it as a place of countless pictorial possibilities. The sublimity of the forest is what inscribes the strength into Reukauf’s motifs, already presupposes them in order to work through them, to question them with his own painterly means. Reukauf’s work is meticulous and deliberate, revealing the painter’s meticulous craft. A tireless rhythm runs through his works, a strong will and the tremendous intention to remain as free as possible from the figurative claim to representability. His painting process begins long before the actual journey into the forest. He works on each canvas in a separate process beforehand, preparing them with layers of chalk ground to give them a particularly smooth, yet absorbable texture. This is followed by the recurring journey into the forest. With his bicycle, converted for transport, Martin Reukauf rides with canvas, easel and colors through a depth of light, sounds and movement and finds pictorial quality there in the forest.
Wahrnehmen, auffinden und erkennen. Festhalten, wiedergeben und zeigen. Martin Reukaufs Malerei ist eine, die den Ort braucht, um zu entstehen. Und Reukaufs Ort ist: der Wald. Und der Wald ist: viele Orte gleichzeitig, ein in sich bewegter Raum, eine eingegrenzte Ausdehnung in Hell und Dunkel, Farbe, Schatten, Licht und Form. Reukauf ist Beobachter, Auffinder, Infragesteller und Deuter. Malerei ist für ihn die Reaktion auf Gesehenes, auf Wahrgenommenes. Eine Antwort auf die Fragen nach dem Zusammenhang von Realität, Wahrnehmung und Darstellbarkeit.
Reukaufs Ölbilder auf Leinwand sind physisch stark präsent, mal in mehrschichtigem Auftrag, mal nur mit flüchtigen, fast transparenten Farbspuren ziehen sie den Betrachter in den Bann. Gleich einer Aufforderung, näher heranzutreten, zur Suche zwischen Oberfläche und Detail, dem Spiel zwischen Erkennbarkeit und dem Wagnis, sich innerhalb der Details vom Bildlichen zu lösen. Reukaufs Bilder wirken in ihrer Diskrepanz und entwickeln dabei eine eigene Dynamik, die neben dem Bild selbst auch das Denken vom Wald an sich verändert – vieles bleibt offen, feine Deutungen werden sichtbar.
Reukaufs Bilder entstehen im immerwährenden Draussen und zeigen dieses als Ort der unzähligen bildlichen Möglichkeiten. Die Erhabenheit des Waldes ist es, was den Motiven Reukaufs die Stärke einschreibt, sie bereits voraussetzt, um sich daran abzuarbeiten, sie infrage zu stellen mit eigenen malerischen Mitteln. Reukauf arbeitet akribisch und bedacht, das sorgfältige Handwerk des Malers wird sichtbar. Ein unermüdlicher Rhythmus durchzieht seine Werke, ein starker Wille und die ungeheure Absicht, möglichst frei zu bleiben vom figurativen Darstellbarkeitsanspruch. Sein Malprozess beginnt weit vor der eigentlichen Fahrt in den Wald. Jede Leinwand bearbeitet er zuvor in einem eigenen Verfahren, präpariert sie mit Schichten von Kreidegrund, damit sie eine besonders glatte, dabei aufnehmbare Textur erhalten. Im Anschluss folgt der immer wiederkehrende Gang in den Wald. Mit seinem Fahrrad, umgebaut für den Transport, fährt Martin Reukauf mit Leinwand, Staffelei und Farben durch eine Tiefe von Licht, Geräuschen, Bewegungen und findet dort im Wald Bildhaftigkeit.

Martin Reukauf calls his pictures forest because he paints them in the forest. He has been doing this for years. He has converted his bicycle so that his suitcase with all his painting utensils, including his easel, fits on one side of the luggage rack, while he clamps the stretched canvas on the other. In this way, he transports canvases measuring up to 120 × 180 cm into the forest. Sometimes he can’t finish the painting. He takes the still wet painting back to his studio, only to return it to the forest the following day. This is because other influences are spreading in the studio. That is not possible, because Martin Reukauf paints what he sees. And in the forest, that is the forest.

Martin Reukauf nennt seine Bilder Wald, weil er sie im Wald malt. Er tut dies seit Jahren. Sein Fahrrad hat er so umgebaut, dass auf der einen Seite des Gepäckträgers sein Koffer mit allen Malutensilien inklusive Staffelei Platz findet, auf der anderen klemmt er die bespannte Leinwand ein. So transportiert er Bildflächen bis zum Format 120 × 180 cm in den Wald hinein. Manchmal kann er das Bild nicht zu Ende malen. Er fährt das noch nasse Bild in sein Studio, um es am folgenden Tag wieder in den Wald zurückzubringen. Denn im Atelier breiten sich andere Einflüsse aus. Das geht nicht, denn Martin Reukauf malt, was er sieht. Und das ist im Wald der Wald.
